Centre medians, vacant sites and junctions are turning into garbage dumping points in this village after local people began to protest against the waste processing unit. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) had assured to make city garbage free last year when villagers started protesting as these groups failed to stop the bad smell and spilling of garbage on the road. A year later the situation is coming back to haunt the BBMP and residents as tonnes of waste is being dumped in every corner of the city.

With no one coming forward to buy compost and refused derived fuel, the BBMP of late is finding it difficult to deal with its seven waste processing units as its manure and refused derived fuel is getting piled. And this pile up is having a cascading effect on the daily waste collection and its process. As a result of piling up of waste,  bad smell and mosquito menace has also increased in the surrounding areas.

Earlier Kannahalli villagers had protested due to bad smell, the spilling of garbage and leachate on streets and BBMP promised them that the issue would be solved and requested them to allow BBMP trucks to pass through their village to enter the waste processing plant.

"The BBMP stated that they would convert the existing facility as waste to energy plant and end the problem. But till now they have not done anything. When we stopped few trucks entering our Kannahallli village, the BBMP took police help to dump waste," said Mohan Raj, Kannahalli Panchayat Resident.

On the other hand, the BBMP has sought permission from the government to divert tonnes of garbage to dump in quarry pit. As a result, Bellahally area in Bengaluru outskirts was identified, and the BBMP started dumping tonnes of waste without any measures.

"The waste should have been covered with tar or the BBMP should have done soil capping. The pollution board has also witnessed the gross violation of people's right to health as the leachate seeped into borewell. Quarry pit is not the solution for waste. The BBMP must stop sending the city waste to our village," said Chandrashekhar, Bellahally villager.

He further added that about 200 truckloads of waste was being dumped every day and the truck drivers were offering ₹3,000 to allow them to dump the waste.  "As we stopped the vehicles for last ten days, the city waste is being dumped everywhere in Bengaluru," he said.

City Mayor G Padmavathi, who is reviewing the situation, held talks with villagers and said few elements brainwash the villagers and has instigated them to protest against BBMP.

"BBMP will provide good roads, health benefits and water supply in return. The villagers need not worry as the quarry pit is a safe place, and it will not allow the leachate to allow to seep into the ground.  Once we complete the of waste to energy plant from the existing processing plant, the entire issue related to city garbage will be put to rest," she said.

The city generates 3,500 tonnes approximately, and the waste is distributed to 7 waste processing units in city outskirts. Due to the piling up of waste at processing units and protest from villagers, the truck drivers refused to take any city waste fearing clash. As a result, the waste is being dumped everywhere.
