Bengaluru all set to witness over 4 lakh animals slaughter for Bakrid

- Now, BBMP has to worry about clearing the animal waste during Bakrid.

FollowWith just two days left for Bakrid celebration, sheep and goat breeders and farmers from across the state are having a field day in Bengaluru and are making a killing business.
Bandappa, a farmer from Srinivaspur in Kolar district, had brought a flock of 200 goats and now has only 40 left. Each goat was priced at Rs 15,000.
"My family owns ten acres of land, but the yield is not satisfactory due to drought. Had we not reared live stock, we would suffer a great loss. By selling goats in Bengaluru, we can recover our losses," he said.
Similarly, Nagaraj from Sira in Tumkur district had also got 300 goats comprising breeds like 'Bannur' and 'Nati' and has priced them between Rs 12,000 and 20,000 per animal depending on its size.
The place in JC Nagar that connects to Mekri Circle, Chamrajpet, Thanisandra and Varthur has become the hub of livestock trade. Rare breeds like Jamuna Pari, Bannur, Shirohi and others are sold here.
Marappa, another goat farmer from Bidar in North Karnataka, has been camping in the City from last ten days as he has got nearly 250 goats to sell at a profitable margin.
"I have got mix breeds. Have sold 180 goats so far and hope to sell the remaining in by Friday or Sunday. If I make Rs 5 lakh, I can expect a profit of 1.5 lakh. This time the demand has increased when compared to last year. Next year I plan to add another 100 goats to the flock. This is the only time we get to make good business and recover from losses," added Marappa.
Business for breeders troubles BBMP
According to previous year's estimations, Bengaluru is all set for the slaughter of over four lakh small animals like sheep and goat and over 10,000 large animals. Approximately 100 tonnes of animal waste per day is expected during Bakrid, which is a three-day celebration. The irony is that the BBMP, Animal Husbandry Department's Joint Director Anand has no idea about the animal slaughter and how much waste will it generate.
"I cannot question regarding animal sacrifice. You better ask the district commissioner as he is the authority to arrange for peaceful Bakrid celebration and ensure law and order in Bengaluru," he said when asked.
An official from BBMP's Solid Waste Management division said the arrangements for disposal of animal waste would be made. Like last year, tractors and autorickshaws covered with plastic sheets will be sent to wards animal sacrifice is expected in a large quantity. This apart, BBMP will coordinate with local mosque committee members and request them to appeal to the community members to avoid disposing waste on the roadside and to leave animal waste at designated tractors and autos meant for clearing animal waste.
"We are expecting over 300 tonnes of animal waste during Bakrid, and the waste will be buried in pits at Kogilu in Bengaluru outskirts," said an official.
