After plastic rice worm infested pulses and substandard oil from CMs Anna Bhagya scheme

The pulses and oil distributed under the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's ambitious programme, Anna Bhagya scheme could be putting the health of the poor at risk as worm-infested pulses and date expired oil are being found to be distributed through the scheme!

These shocking details have come to light after the Kalaburagi divisional food safety officer paid a surprise visit to the government warehouse following complaints of substandard goods in the Anna Bhagya scheme, reports Vijayavani.

The officer sent the samples of grain and oil to the laboratory where it was confirmed that pulses and the oil were not worthy of consumption. According to the lab report, the green gram had 6 per cent worms in it along with 1.8 per cent of dust particles. "This is not suitable for consumption at all," according to a report submitted to deputy commissioner by the food safety officer, RS Biradar, reports Vijaya Vani.

The condition of palm oil provided in the CM's scheme is also no better. For, at least 60 per cent of the stock in the district warehouse have an expired date. "The palm oil should have been used in December but the authorities have not distributed to the beneficiaries for reasons best known to them," reports Vijaya Vani. According to the lab report, the fatty acid content in the oil have recorded at 1.2 per cent while it should not have exceeded 0.5 per cent as per the food safety standard. Hence, this has been termed substandard for use.

Meanwhile, Food and Civil Supplies deputy director Arun Kumar Sangavi told Vijaya Vani that the department has not distributed the pulses for the July quota. "Since it was an old stock, it could have developed worms. However, we will send the sample to the lab again," Arun Kumar said.

The deputy commissioner has been urged from stopping the distribution of these substandard products to the poor.
