Seven reasons why Sushma Swarajs comeback is the best you will see in a long time

In Narendra Modi’s cabinet if there is one minister who commands tremendous respect from online followers it is Sushma Swaraj. She has turned Twitter into a tool to get the best of her work done. Swaraj has received applause from even staunch BJP opponents like Aam Aadmi Party for her exceptional work. Swaraj along with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, became the voice of the party in the face of staunch opposition post winning the 2014 assembly elections.

The 65-year-old External Affairs Minister underwent a six-hour long kidney transplant surgery in December 2016, after a kidney failure. She has chronic diabetes, the reason for her kidney to stop working. After three months of recuperation, she was back in March 2017. She immediately resumed in her in a manner very few are capable of.

1)    Condemnation of hate crimes against Indians in the US

On the very first day of her Parliament session after coming back, she responded to the Congress who alleged that the government was sitting idle while Indians were being attacked in the United States of America. Swaraj said that both the US administration and the US Congress, including President Donald Trump, have condemned these incidents. She said these attacks were acts of individuals and said India would not issue a travel ban against the US.
Her speech infused a new life into the gathering, and several members attending the session applauded her speech.

2)    Strong opposition to Pakistan convicting Kulbhushan Jadhav

Pakistan claimed to have held a military trial where they convicted alleged spy and former Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav and decided to give him the capital punishment.

However, Swaraj was not one to take this injustice lying down. In the Parliament, she warned Pakistan that it had no evidence of wrongdoing by Jadhav and said that his execution would be an act of pre-meditated murder.

She further spoke about the terrorism in Kashmir and said that Pakistan cannot take the Kashmir issue to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and can only be solved bilaterally. The Kulbhushan Jadhav case has deteriorated the bilateral ties between the two countries. She said that Kulbhushan Jadhav cannot be given the capital punishment until the matter is resolved by the ICJ.

3)    Ripping through the dragon

Swaraj ripped through the Chinese administration after a suspected Chinese helicopter was sighted flying above Indian Territory in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Swaraj said that China had made several unauthorised incursions into India, but a violation of its airspace was unacceptable. She stated that India would have a word with Beijing with regards to this.

4)    Giving it back to the big bully

The US recently pulled out of the Paris Climate agreement, and President Donald Trump said India is staying back only for the benefits. Swaraj rejected Trump’s accusations and stated that India did not sign the agreement under any pressure or for money as was alleged by Trump. She said that India would remain committed to the Paris agreement whether the US stays in it or not.

5)    Gears up to save 29 Telangana workers captive in Saudi Arabia

Sushma Swaraj shot off a tweet to the Indian ambassador to Saudi Arabia to help save 29 workers from Telangana held captive by their employers Al-Hajry. The labourers were held captive after demanding leaves to go back home.

6)    The saviour of women

A woman from Punjab, Sukhwant Kaur, who was allegedly sold to a family in Saudi Arabia as domestic help returned to India after her husband approached the Ministry of External Affairs.

Swaraj directed the Indian High Commission in Islamabad to renew the passport of an Indian woman, Mohammadia Begum from Telangana, married to a Pakistani man and facilitate her return. Her husband and in-laws physically abused her.

And everyone remembers how she facilitated the return of Uzma Ahmad. Ahmad, who married Pakistani national Tahir Ali, alleged that she was forced to marry at gunpoint and was tortured by Ali and his family. She had taken refuge in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. After returning to India, she thanked Swaraj for the help she received from the high commission.

7)    Foreign visits to resolve inter-country issues

Sushma Swaraj is not one to be held back by physical constraints. After recuperating quickly from the Kidney surgery, she is ready to embark on a trip to Bangladesh and Myanmar. She will also visit several West Asian countries and probably a trip to the US to discuss the H-1B visa regulations with President Donald Trump.

Her achievements before her surgery are remarkable as well. But these points show that even physical discomfort cannot stop Sushma Swaraj from serving her nation better.
