The eighth and final phase of voting is being held in Bengal today amid the growing menace of Covid that is spreading fast in the state. The election is being held on 35 seats lying across Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum and Kolkata.

The state of West Bengal recorded 16.04% voter turnout till 9am today for the eight and final phase of the assembly elections.

Two crude bombs were hurled in front of Mahajati Sadan in the Jorasanko Assembly area in central Kolkata during the last phase of the Bengal Assembly Election. TMC candidate from Jorasanko, Vivek Gupta claimed that the bombs were hurled to scare voters.

"Two crude bombs have been hurled, as you can see. I don't need to mention who is behind this. It is being done to scare and intimidate voters," said Vivek Gupta, TMC candidate from Jorasanko.

A huge deployment of central forces and Kolkata police were rushed to the spot at Central Avenue, one of the busiest roads in Kolkata. However, no reports of injury or casualty have been reported in the incident so far.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has sought details of an incident where a bomb was hurled near Mahajati Sadan Auditorium in north Kolkata earlier this morning.

Six seats in Malda, 11 each in Murshidabad and Birbhum and seven seats in Kolkata are voting in this phase. Polling is being held across 11,860 centres. The voters will choose among 283 candidates, 35 of whom are women.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted on Thursday morning, calling upon people to “cast their vote and enrich the festival of democracy”.

Security measures have been heightened in view of the violence in the previous phases, particularly the death of five people in Cooch Behar in the fourth round of polling on April 10, an EC official said. The poll panel has deployed 641 companies of central forces in the final phase to ensure free and fair voting, he said.
