Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will bring laws against 'land jihad' and 'love jihad' if it retains power in poll-bound Assam. Shah was addressing a rally in Kamrup district.

Speaking in Kamrup district of Assam, Shah said AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal is doing 'land jihad'.

"I give you a guarantee that after five years you will not find anyone indulging in 'land jihad' in the state." said the BJP leader.

The senior BJP leader said, "The BJP's manifesto has several items. But the biggest among them is that the BJP government will work towards bring in laws against love and land jihad."

Earlier this year, too, the state government had claimed that it will bring separate laws to stop forceful religious conversions and another to protect the land rights of the indigenous Assamese people.

‘Love jihad’ is a term used by some Hindu groups to describe relationships between Muslim men and Hindu women. They accuse Muslim men of seducing Hindu women and luring them into marriage with an intention to convert them to Islam. The BJP has this time also used the term 'land jihad' which local leaders say is the party's effort to save land of the indigenous people from getting captured by giving pattas or official certificates.

The party manifesto also promises to enforce a deradicalisation policy to identify and quash organisations and individuals fanning communal exclusion and separatism.

Highlighting BJP’s steps to empower women in Assam if elected, Union Minister Amit Shah on Friday said that every girl after 8th grade will be given free cycles and every female college going girl will be given scooters. “We have decided that after 8th grade all the daughters will be given bicycles. Scooty will be given to all daughters going to college, Shah said while addressing a rally in Kamrup, Assam.

The BJP, led by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, is fighting to retain power in Assam, a state that has seen Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah paying frequent visits in recent weeks. It goes to polls in three phases from March 27 to April 6.
