Nethra Krishnamurthy, a techie from Mysore, residing in Melbourne with her husband and her 8-month-old baby, is currently battling with her life in the Alfred Hospital. She was going back to her work after feeding her baby at a day care centre in Melbourne. It was then a car ran over her and several other pedestrians.

A man stole a maroon Holden Commodore and was driving recklessly on the streets of Melbourne. He decided to run over whoever comes in front of him and in this process, five innocent lives were lost and more than 30 people were injured on Friday in front of the Bourke Street Mall in Melbourne.

Nethra has suffered multiple injuries including deep lacerations to her head. She has fractured ribs and a punctured lung as well.

Mohan Kumar (Nethra’s husband) posted on Facebook on Monday Nethra has been keeping strong and is responding positively to the treatments.  He also mentioned that it is going to be a long recovery process for Nethra as she is likely to remain in the hospital for some time from now.

Responding to his post, a guy named Tanvir Chowdhury created a crowd-funding campaign and that has already raised over $ 1,00,000 for Nethra’s treatment.

"Given the severity of her injuries, Nethra will remain in hospital for quite some time, and following this will have a long road to recovery, both physically and psychologically. Please help us to raise funds for this mum and her young family, during this unfathomably difficult time," said Tanvir.

However, it is not only about Nethra’s current condition but there were other lives which could have been saved as well.  In fact, the entire freakish car rampage could have been contained by the highway patrol and the police.

The Police Association even confirmed later that they did have a number of chances to stop the man driving the Holden Commodore but eventually did not. Why such carelessness? And this casual attitude of Melbourne cost five lives and several others like Nethra are suffering from their injuries.

Police Association secretary Detective Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles even went on to state that they were asked by their superiors not to intervene. Why were the intercepts called off? Why did the police stop pursuing the car which they could have easily stopped and arrested the man? Only the Melbourne City Police Department can answer these questions.
