British Home Secretary Priti Patel has signed the extradition order of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi after the Westminster Court allowed the extradition plea.

Nirav Modi, who is wanted in India in connection with the Rs 13,500 crore PNB fraud scam, has the right to challenge this order in the UK High Court. He is currently incarcerated in jail.

The Westminster Magistrates' Court had, on February 25, 2021, allowed Nirav Modi's extradition after District Judge Samuel Goozee accepted the Central Bureau of India's contention that prima facie evidence exists against him for money laundering.

The CBI had then termed the UK court ruling as "a reminder that fugitives, who have eluded the process of law after commission of large value frauds, cannot consider themselves above the process merely because they have changed jurisdictions."

Nirav Modi was arrested in the UK on an extradition warrant on March 19, 2019.  He was charged with money laundering, conspiring to destroy evidence and intimidating witnesses.

The CBI has accused of large-scale fraud upon PNB through fraudulently obtaining loan agreements. He is also facing an Enforcement Directorate probe linked to the laundering of the proceeds of fraud.
