In the latest update in Lakhimpur Kheri incident, farmers and the Uttar Pradesh government reached an agreement, a day after a demonstration turned violent, killing nine people.

The government announced that a retired High Court judge will probe the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case and also the families of the four farmers killed in the incident will be given Rs 45 lakh compensation, while those injured in the skirmishes will receive Rs 10 lakh.

Appearing in a joint press conference with BKU’s Rakesh Tikait on Monday, UP Additional DG, Law and Order, Prashant Kumar, announced that the state government after talks with farmer representatives had decided to agree to their demands.

“The kin of the decreased will be given an ex gratia of Rs 45 lakh and a government job. Each injured will be given Rs 10 lakh. FIRs under relevant sections will be lodged as demanded by the farmers. The incident will be probed by a retired high court judge and perpetrators caught within eight days,” said Kumar.

Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Awanish Awasthi said two FIRs have been registered in connection with Sunday's violence that broke out after two SUVs allegedly ran over a group of anti-farm law protesters who were demonstrating against a visit of Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed regret over the event, calling it ‘unfortunate’.

"Action will be taken against whoever is guilty," Yogi Adityanath stated.

He also appealed to people to await the results of the investigation and not reach any conclusion or get misled.

Meanwhile, the umbrella body of farm unions, Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has written to President Ram Nath Kovind, demanding that MoS, Home, Ajay Mishra be sacked and a murder case filed against his son.
