Protesters against TASMAC find innovative ways to agitate Marry off two men to make a point

Protesters in Tamil Nadu , these days, have found innovative ways to make a point. The New Delhi agitation, for instance, saw a number of ways in which the farmers grabbed the attention of the media. This time too, they did not fail to raise eyebrows. Protesting against the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) shops in Tamil Nadu, agitators adopted a unique way to drive their point home.

The protesters in Thirunelveli staged the 'wedding' of two men to vent out their anger at the TASMAC shops. After the Supreme Court ordered that all liquor outlets near the highway be closed down, protests intensified demanding the closure of the TASMAC shops too. Although the government authorities were forced to do so under public pressure, many shops were reopened last month. This resulted in further protests and agitations. The residents of Paavurchathiram, near Thirunelveli had protested against the TASMAC shops in different ways. On May 1, for instance, they made temporary shelter near the liquor shop, cooked food and stayed there. The protest was done to show the ill-effects of liquor.

At Thirunelveli, the protesters built a stage and decorated it like a wedding venue. Two men were brought to the stage and a mock wedding ceremony was conducted. The message was clear, "If you are an alcoholic, we will not let our women marry you, leaving you with the only option of marrying a man."
