Madras High Court quashes Tamil Nadu governments order of 85 per cent reservation in medical admission

The Madras High Court on Monday, July 31 upheld an order quashing 85 per cent reservation in medical admissions for state board students of Tamil Nadu.

A division bench of Justices Nooty Ramamohana Rao and M Dhandapani passed the order saying that the appeal moved by the state lacked merits.

The move comes as a massive relief to CBSE students in Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu government had passed an order giving reservations for students of state board schools in medical colleges. A few CBSE students had filed an affidavit against the order.

On July 14, a single judge of the court quashed the government order passed by the state providing reservation calling it a discriminatory move.

The Tamil Nadu government filed an appeal saying that the government wanted to make provisions so as to protect the interests of the majority of students from state board who did not have access to CBSE schools. The government had claimed that the NEET examination was based on CBSE syllabus that gave CBSE board students an undue advantage.

Counsels for CBSE students argued that the reservation had been brought in only to serve the vested interest of the urban private state board institutions, reported the Times of India.
