Tokyo Olympics: Deepika Kumari finishes 9th in archery ranking round, to take on Bhutan's Karma in knockout
The Tokyo Olympics is underway from Friday. India began its proceedings with archery, as Deepika Kumari took part in the Women's Individual Ranking Round, where she managed to finish ninth and take on Bhutan's Karma in the Round of 32.

She could score 663 points, as her performance varied between excellent to average. While she started at number eight, she fell to 14th at a point. However, she recovered sufficiently to finish fourth in the opening half.

Nevertheless, the penultimate round saw her performance tumble, as she slipped to seventh with 609 points, while in the final round, she fell to ninth with 663. She would now take on Bhutan's Karma in the Round of 32.

Meanwhile, it was three Koreans and a Mexican who broke the Olympic record of 673. South Korean trio An San (680), Jang Minhee (677) and Kang Chae Young (675), along with Alejandra Valencia (674) of Mexico, broke the long-standing Olympic record in the event's qualification set by Ukraine's Lina Herasymenko during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. It was also a record by any country at the event (2,032 points), going past Mexico's 1,976 points.
In the Ranking Round, 64 women fire six arrows at the target 70 metres away. Each archer has two minutes to fire six arrows, with 720 being the perfect score. Following the conclusion, the top-ranked archer faces the 64th-ranked woman, and it goes on so.
