Yeddyurappa requests the governor to ban Amnesty in the state

So far, it was only the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) who was fighting the battle against Amnesty, but now the BJP too has joined the fray.

Top BJP leaders in the state met with Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala on Monday and submitted a complaint against the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Amnesty International.

In the complaint, the leaders have requested the Governor to impose a ban on Amnesty and have also demanded an apology from Karnataka Home minister Dr G Parameshwara, who gave a clean chit to the NGO during the on-going investigation.

“More than 20 countries have banned Amnesty. But, in Karnataka, the Congress is supporting the organisation. Parameshwara and Digvijay Singh should demand an apology (from Amnesty) and retract the cases filed against those who protested against Amnesty,” said BJP state president Yeddyurappa.

Other leaders such as Jagadish Shettar, V Somanna, CT Ravi and R Ashok accompanied Yeddyurappa in his meeting with the Governor.

“Those who claim that they’ll protect the nation are themselves responsible for violating the law. Concepts like patriotism should not be politicised. If they know anything about Amnesty they should inform the police and cooperate with the investigating team,” said Congress leader Mallikarjuna Kharge.

Yeddyurappa had met with ABVP protestors at Freedom Park on August 16.
