Karnataka Chief Justice (CJ) Subhro Kamal Mukherjee has claimed that a man walked into his residence and offered money for a verdict in his favour.

The chief justice was due to give his verdict on a land encroachment case filed against Umra Developers in Bengaluru.

The Income Tax department had filed a case alleging that the developers had encroached land that belonged to the government.

With the case in court, a person visited the CJ's residence recently and introduced himself by flashing his identity card. He discussed the trial with Mukherjee offered to pay him for a favourable verdict.

The CJ spoke to the media, but didn’t reveal the identity of the person.

“A man walks into the house of the Chief Justice and dares to bribe him. I could have handed him over to the police immediately. But, I am revealing this to the press because I believe that these matters should be discussed publicly,” Karnataka Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee

According to a report in The Hindu, RTI activist Jayakumar Hiremath submitted a complaint to the High Grounds police station based on the remarks made by the Chief Justice during the proceedings of a petition on July 5.

Hiremath had also filed a complaint requesting the police to reveal the identity of the person, but the police denied any information citing the matter as “sub judice”.

During the case proceedings, Mukherjee was asked to present the visiting card given by the man who tried to bribe him.

The advocates representing Umrah Developers claimed to not recognise the person whose name was printed on the visiting card.

In a similar situation, Kerala high court judge KT Sankaran had also in June claimed that he was bribed to 'doctor' a verdict.
