Malayalam actress assault was an isolated incident says CPM leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan

All of Malayalam film industry is seething, after what happened to a prominent Malayalam actress. The actress was assaulted and left by the accused hoping that she too like the others, would keep mum. This was not to be case and the actress spoke out and lodged  complaint against her attackers.

While everyone has been  hailing her strength and her conviction to gain justice for herself. Kerala CPM state Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was quick to downplay the incident and said that the attack towards her was an isolated one, he said. Talking to reporters he remarked that this incident with the actress could not be used as a mark to say that law and order had deteriorated in the state.

Using it as an opportunity to throw some political shade, Kodiyeri made a jibe saying that the situation was better than the previous five years. Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala is trying to show that he has more power than former chief minister Oommen Chandy, he added.

The minister did not have much to say and applauded the police for its swift action in the case and for arresting the driver.

It is very strange to hear his kind of incredibly irresponsible statements coming from a minister like Kodiyeri who had previously in the party mouthpiece Deshabhimani, written that he strongly supports the entry of women in Sabarimala.

His dismissal of the case somehow brings to mind different shades of man when dealing with women issues. Did he support the Sabrimala issue only because it would gain him political mileage? And is he dismissing the actress’s assault as a trivial one, because he has nothing to gain from it.

The victim may be an actress but she is also a woman, and abuse, assault, rape or molestation affects every woman alike. Before making such callous statements, Kodiyeri Balakrishanan should try and go back to his piece in the Deshabhimani.
