KWA to slap RS 50000 fine on water pilferers

In view of upcoming drought, Kerala Water Authority (KWA) plans to instigate measures against wastage of water. KWA has proposed to act desperately against those misusing their supply and is planning to slap fines as huge as Rs 50, 000 from those collecting water from disconnected lines. They will have to pay the penalty in addition to water charge.

The KWA has asked people to use water solely for drinking and cooking. The authority will cancel the water connection of consumers if they are found using water for purposes like washing clothes and vehicles, bathing or for construction activities. People are also not allowed to pump pipe water to tube wells, wells and tanks.

Consumers are also asked to plug any leaks in connection lines or pumps in the house tanks on a war footing. The KWA has also asked people to alert the authority in case they find that the water metre is working even after closing all taps and main valve.

Domestic connections having water charges due for six or more months will be disconnected while action will be taken against non-domestic connections having dues over two months. Those who fail to replace faulty metre too would face disconnection. Consumers who have not got bills are asked to contact Water Authority.

"Losing one drop will result in loss of 15 litres per day. Domestic connections alone consume as many as 300-kilo litres of water, and this is mainly due to neglected leakage. The

loss is enough to meet the needs of four families," KWA executive engineer Suresh Chandran said.

Capital city could wade through summer if wastage can be avoided. "Water Authority have enough water to survive for 75 days. City area has not started experiencing water shortage yet. As much as 30% of water usage could be reduced by taking care of leaks," he said.
