KSU panel dissolved

Sending out a strong message against the practice of sharing party posts as per group equations in Kerala, Congress high command dismissed the state and district committees of Kerala Students Union (KSU), the state wing of National Students Union (NSU). Rahul Gandhi took the decision, despite opposition from Oommen Chandy and Ramesh Chennithala, who lead two major factions in the Congress.

Congress high command’s intervention followed widespread complaints against the nomination of KSU office bearers. Gandhi was not apparently happy with the sharing of posts between Congress (I) and (A) factions led by Chennithala and Chandy respectively. The Congress vice president also directed the leadership to conduct organisational elections in the students’ wing.

Though Chandy and Chennithala argued against the dismissal of committees and argued that the students’ wing should be organising protests against the state government instead of wasting time on organizational matters, the high command did not pay heed.

There were complaints that the KSU state president V S Joy, who belongs to the A-faction and vice president Rohit of the I-group, prepared the list of office bearers by maintaining the power balance between the groups.  They also had the support of Chandy and Chennnithala in the process.

Though Sravan Rao, the NSU secretary who is in charge of the state, said that the organisational elections would take place without delay, the process will take at least six months to complete and the students’ wing would not be functioning till then.
