Kochi to get world class cruise terminal

In what comes as a big boost to the tourism sector in the state, Kochi will soon get a new world-class cruise terminal. The new facility, proposed by Central Government, will come up at the cost of ₹25.7 crore.

The world-class cruise terminal will ensure a smooth sail for tourists who are at present facing lack of basic amenities and delay in immigration clearance. The new terminal is expected to be a solution for the limited facilities at current terminal, Samudrika. At 2, 300 sq m it is planned adjacent to Q7 and 8 berths at Ernakulam wharf.

"Every year during the November-May season, approximately 60, 000 tourists descend in Kochi, and an average of 45 vessels touch the port. One of the biggest such vessels that arrived Kochi port is 'Quantum of the Seas.' The cruise tourists alone contribute ₹60 crore to state's exchequer. A cruise tourist spends an average of $200 in the state," a senior port official said.

The arrival of ships translates into good tidings for shipping agents, tour operators, antique sellers, travel guides and auto and taxi services in the city. With the new terminal, more number of ships are expected to arrive Kochi.

At present ships up to 250 metres, carrying over 2000 passengers can dock at Samudrika. Often larger ships anchor at Ernakulam wharf and tourists have to come to Samudrika to complete statutory clearances like immigration and customs. With the new project, tourists can get clearance for their papers at the terminal itself, speeding up the procedure. The terminal will follow international immigration standards of operation including structure analogous to international airports.

"e-landing and e-visa counters will be established, and the total number of counters will be increased to 30. The facility will aid professional dealings with tourists," deputy traffic manager Gireesh Thomas said.

With advanced facilities and infrastructure Kochi is expecting a surge in tourist inflow.
