Drought dries up Kerala's milk procurement, prices to rise

  • Milk production has declined by 75, 000 litre per day
  • The decline is due to rising temperatures and a shortage of water and green fodder
  • The Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd is planning to purchase milk from Andhra Pradesh
Drought milk production Milma hike price

A steep fall in milk production owing to drought has prompted the Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (Milma) to hike milk prices. An increase in the price of milk imported from other states also forced the co-operative to hike price. Milk production in the state has declined owing to rising temperatures and a shortage of water and green fodder.

Compared to last year, production has declined by 75,000 litre per day. But the demand has gone up by 35, 000 litres per day. Earlier Milma used to purchase 2.5 lakh litre milk from other states, while it is buying 3.5 lakh litre this year.

Karnataka has hiked the price of milk by ₹1 per litre while Tamil Nadu is demanding a hike of ₹2 per litre respectively. The co-operative is now planning to procure milk from Andhra Pradesh.

"The decision was taken after conducting a thorough study about the price of milk in other states. We also considered the expenses incurred by farmers in Kerala," P T Gopalakurup, Milma chairman said.

Reduction in production will affect dairy farming in Kerala and the only solution to help farmers is to increase the price, he said.
