Cauvery Row Karnataka to file Objection before Cauvery supervising Committee

In a counter move against Tamil Nadu’s petition before the Cauvery Supervising Committee seeking 61 more TMC of water, Karnataka has sent in its Advocate General to submit its objections over the "unrealistic" demand.

The Cauvery Supervisory Committee is expected to convene a meeting in New Delhi on Monday (September 12) to decide on the amount of water to be released to Tamil Nadu and other states.

The Chief Secretaries of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry besides officials of the Central Water Commission are expected to attend the meeting.

Earlier this week, Tamil Nadu had approached the committee demanding that it should order Karnataka to release another 61 TMC of water.

However, Karnataka has contested the demand claiming that the state was facing an acute water shortage due to average rainfall, and it was left with 45 TMC water - barely enough for the drinking water requirements of the state.

As per the order of the Cauvery Tribunal, Karnataka is required to release a total of 94 TMC of water, however, till now it has released only 33 TMC. According to a report in Kannada Prabha, Karnataka has now sent in  Advocate General Madhusudan R Naik to submit its contentions to the committee on Saturday.

The Karnataka AG is expected to tell the committee that the state does not have the required volume of water in its reservoirs to release to Tamil Nadu and if Karnataka complies by the SC directive, the state will be in no position to provide even drinking water to the citizens.
