Bengaluru opens 198 centres to collect electronic waste

Bengaluru adopts scientific e-waste disposal methods

The provision for disposal of household electronic waste will now be a lot more organised than it was before.

Bengaluru Urban Development Minister K J George said, "Separate divisions in 198 corporation wards have been opened for collecting household E-waste."

Electronic waste, also known as e-waste, consists of computers, monitors, televisions, home entertainment systems, printers, fax machines and mobile phones.

E-waste collected from these specified centres would be given to registered recyclers for further process.

According to the minister, there are no statistics related to the generation of E-waste in the Bengaluru. Also, there was no proper method to dispose of e-waste.

However, according to a survey conducted by an eco-management institute in 2014, household E-waste collected from Shivajinagar, Goripalya, Jolly Mohalla, City Market, Bismillah Nagar and other localities have been disposed of in an unscientific manner which can pose several health hazards to the residents in these areas.
