Arrest of Dalit sisters  NHRC intervention

 

NHRC has sought an explanation from state Chief Secretary and DGP on the issues that led to the arrest of Dalit sisters at Thalassery on charges of attacking the office of CPM.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to Kerala Chief Secretary and state police chief Loknath Behera seeking explanation on the arrest of Dalit sisters at Thalassery in Kannur for allegedly attacking the local office of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) .  The Commission directed them to file the report within four weeks. 

 

The Commission's more is based on based on a complaint filed by Congress MP Mullappally Ramachandran. The Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes has also registered a case in connection with the incident.

Akhila and Anjana, daughters of Congress leader N Rajan, were arrested for allegedly barging into CPM branch committee office at Thalassery and attacking a party worker last month for allegedly calling caste and harassing them.

The sisters, along with the one-and-half-year-old child of Akhila, were sent to women's jail after being slapped with non-bailable charges. The incident kicked up a political row after Congress and BJP attacked the government of "political fascism" by the CPM. 
 

The police filed case against Thalassery MLA A N Shamseer and DYFI leader P P Divya in a series of cases and counter cases in connection with the controversy.
