Mahalaya is a very auspicious day for the Bengalis. This day marks the start of Durga puja. From children to elderly people, everyone loves watching Mahalaya on television screens. Bengalis are slowly beginning to get a glimpse of Durga puja on TV. Zee Bangla had arranged the show of Mahalaya on September 17. Actress Ditipriya was seen in two forms of the goddess Durga.

Around 40 tonnes of fresh Padma Hilsa (fish) arrived in the wholesale fish market of Kolkata. Though the price of Hilsa has gone up, the people of Kolkata are not bothered by the high price. Hilsa was sold at Lake Market in Kolkata on Thursday (September 17) at Rs 1,400. The large Hilsa was sold at Rs 2,000 per kg.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday (September 17) urged everyone to not let the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic dampen the spirit of Durga puja. Mamata Banerjee wished everyone on the auspicious occasion of Mahalaya. She ensured that nobody will be deprived of celebrating Durga puja this year (2020).
 

Mysuru’s Chamundi Hills has been shut down for three days as COVID-19 cases are on the increase in the city. More number of people were expected to visit the hill on Wednesday on Mahalaya Amavasya.

People will not be able to perform tarpan on the occasion of Mahalaya in the Ganga ghat of Dakshineswar temple. Authorities have decided to keep the Ganga ghat closed on the day of Mahalaya due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
