Thrissur school students police beat up Medha Patkar rally Gujarat

Two students from Thrissur were reportedly beaten up by the police in Gujarat on Wednesday when they were on their way to take part in the Rally for Valley organised by renowned social activist Medha Patkar.

The students from Salsabeel Green School in Kiraloor were detained along with Patkar and dozens of others in Gujarat's Chhota Udepur district, when they were on their way to join a protest held by the Narmada dam-affected people. The police allegedly forced a group of students, including the two Keralites, into a bus and assaulted them, before admitting them to a hospital.

Salsabeel school has been an active participant in environment related activities for years, according to school manager Mohammed Hussain.

The activists, including Patkar, were held on the Gujarat-Madhya Pradesh border near Kawant town in Chhota Udepur. "A group of people, who were on their way to Chhota Udepur, were detained at Kavta check-post on Gujarat-Madhya Pradesh border," a police official from Kawant police station said.

In the wake of the Gujarat elections, the government has been trying to complete construction works on Narmada dam. Medha and activists of Narmada Bachao Andolan came out to join the protests held by dam-affected people at Kevadiya in Narmada district.
