The CPI in Kerala is reportedly considering to field AISF leader and former JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The CPI is yet to hold any formal discussions on the candidates for the 2019 polls, but the party wants to capitalise on the increasing acceptance of its youth wing leader among the Kerala youth, according to reports.

Though there is no official decision in this regard yet, it is understood that the consensus among CPI leaders is that fielding Kanhaiya will be beneficial to the party, considering his hostility with the Sangh Parivar.

The report claims a senior AIYF leader has said that Kanhaiya’s name is being mentioned in informal meetings. If Kanhaiya gets the green light to contest from Kerala, he will be likely to be fielded in Thiruvananthapuram, where the BJP is starting to find its footing.

Kanhaiya, who hails from Begusarai in Bihar, has reportedly been learning Malayalam. He had visited Kerala recently to inaugurate the AISF state conference. He hailed Kerala for not letting the BJP succeed in elections held in the state.

The CPI had successfully fielded JNU student and AISF leader Mohammed Mohsin to contest the Assembly election from the Pattambi constituency last year.
