Thief rents a room at a lodge to cut the ceiling and loot jewelry shop below

Soon on the heels of an incident in Hongasandra where thieves dug a hole in the wall to steal from an adjacent jewelry shop, another incident of a man renting a room in the first floor of a lodge at Cottonpet and cut the ceiling to loot a jewelry shop below has been reported by Kannada Prabha.

Platinum Deluxe is a lodge on the first floor of a two storied building at Cottonpet main road.  The ground floor has shops and of them one is Kanchan, a jewelry shop.  On June 19, a man by name Hussain rented room number 102, below which is the Kanchan jewelry shop. The hotel people did not suspect of anything as everyday he used to go out for work and return at night. However, Hussain was boring the ceiling using a drilling machine, wide enough for one man to jump down.  On Saturday the shop was closed on account of a Jain festival.  On Friday night the owner closed down the shop at night and left.  On Sunday he opened the shop to see things scattered and was shocked to see a hole in the ceiling and gold jewelry missing. He immediately complained to the police.

The police interrogated a man from Erode, Tamil Nadu, who was residing in the next room since 3 days.  All the staff of the lodge are also being questioned. Both the lodge and the jewelry shop have CCTV cameras fitted and the police are inspecting them for clues.  On either side of Kanchan Jewellers are medical shop and men’s parlour. It is said that locals had brought to the notice of the lodge staff about drilling machine noise. But they had ignored it saying it must be the traffic noise.  DCP M N Anucheth said that the police are evaluating the value of stolen goods.

There is also a suspicion that both Hongasandra and this theft may have been the handiwork of a same gang. The man who stayed for 20 days left the lodge on Sunday morning without settling the bill.  The staff say except a small bag, he had nothing.  He had given a fake address at Kalburgi. The police say prima facie the lodge has shown neglect in procuring documents at the time of admission, said the police.
