Mammoth rally in support of Lingayata

Lingayats who had gathered at a mammoth rally in Belagavi to step up their agitation to demand separate religion status for them strongly condemned RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat. Bhgwat had recently suggested that Lingayats should drop their demand for separate religion status for them in the interest of strengthening Hinduism.

MLC Basavaraja Horatti responded strongly that Mohan Bhagavath should not interfere in Lingayata issue. Panchamasali mutt seer Basava Mruthyunjaya Swamiji said “we are not begging, but demanding our rights, Mohan Bhagat. We are not living in Manuvadi Bharatha but we are the citizens of Babasaheb Ambedkar's free India. This is our right. Lingayta should get independent religion status and we will definitely get it,” reports Kannada Prabha.

Seer of Chitradurga mutt Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru of Chitradurga said “We will definitely get independent religion status for Lingayats. Basavanna is the religious Guru for us. Without Basavanna and Basavanna’s doctrines our religion has no bright future. Lingayats have their own definite history.”

Interestingly, important BJP leaders were absent at the convention and several seers and legislators expressed their anguish in this regard. Mathe Mahadevi said “ Which is more important to you? Religion or party? Decide. Why are you getting tickets under Lingayata quota for elections?”

A mammoth rally of Lingayats was held at Belagavi on Tuesday under the aegis of over 60 seers of mutts demanding independent status for Lingayats. Over one lakh Lingayats assembled at the KLE Institution’s Lingaraja College sports grounds, demanding in unison for separate status for Lingayats. The convention decided to hold the next rally in Lathur in Maharashtra on September 3.
