heavy rains in bengaluru koramangala flooded

Weekend plans of Bengalureans literally were washed away by the incessant rain that has been battering the city since the wee hours of Saturday.

The night-long rain has been giving sleepless nights to the residents in HSR Layout, Koramangala, ST Bed, Silk Board and nearby areas. However, the worst hit areas were Koramangala and ST Bed layout. The residents in 4th Block Koramangala had their worst fears haunting them when they woke up to flooded roads on Saturday morning. The residents are yet to overcome from the damage caused by torrential rain on August 15. It may be recalled here that the houses in the low-lying areas were deluged with sewage water entering their homes on August 15. Majority of the residents had taken shelter on the first floor of many houses to save themselves from being flooded.

The aftermath of the deluge was such that in the last two weeks, the house rent in the area has drastically been slashed. No one wants to rent a house Koramanagala as the area continues to be flooded whenever it rains.

Complaints of waterlogging have been reported from Koramangala, HSR Layout, RT Nagar, Bommanahalli and Anand Nagar.

In fact, the City has been receiving the rain since Thursday and as on August 31, the city received 72 mm of rainfall. The rainfall in August is considered the highest so far in the City - the city had registered 387 mm of rainfall in 1998 and this August, the City received over 400 mm of rainfall, reports Kannada Prabha quoting the Meteorological Department.

Control rooms set up by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike have been flooded with distress calls forcing Mayor G Padmvathi to rush to the affected areas like Gottigere, HSR Layout and Seshadripuram. But that has not consoled the citizens in Koramangala. Residents here rue that the BBMP seems to have not learnt any lessons from August 15 deluge. For, it has not initiated any measures to clean the Storm Water Drains, yet, leave alone clearing waste from the drain.

Trees have been uprooted in Indiranagar 17 C Road, Richmond Road, Kaggadasapura, Teachers' Colony, Mount Carmel College Road, Amruthahalli, Seshadripuram, BTM Layout and surrounding areas. The BBMP personnel have been working since late night to clear the fallen trees.
