United Bengaluru has lodged a complaint with Justice P Vishwanath Shetty of Lokayukta urging action against officials who have failed to conserve water bodies in the city despite Court order, reported Kannada Prabha.

A delegation of office bearers of United Bengaluru met Justice P Vishwanath Sheet on Thursday and lodged a complaint against officials who have failed to protect tanks in the City. The organization submitted a report of study carried out regarding the status of tanks, agitations carried out urging their protections in the City.

United Bengaluru has surveyed 27 tanks. Destruction of tanks, encroachment, dumping of construction waste, industrial effluents, and other such unethical practices have been identified and documented. In 1985, the government formed a committee headed by retired IAS officer N Lakshman Rao to protect the tanks in the City.

The committee prepared a report of the studies carried out in this regard and submitted to the government. In 2011 another committee was formed headed by Justice N K Patil. The Court heard a case in this regard and issued orders for the officials concerned to take appropriate action to preserve the tanks. However, the officials have not carried out the court’s order and have completely failed to preserve the tanks.

Hence, the delegation appealed to Lokayukta to direct the officials to take action to preserve tanks and also initiate action against the officials.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, freedom fighter H S Doreswamy said there is an urgency to preserve tanks, failing which the future generation will face serious problems. If tanks are not preserved now, there may be a war for water in future. Though the problem is becoming severe by day the State Government is not taking any steps to conserve tanks. There is a need for all civilians to join hands and fight for the same, he said.

The State Government is not maintaining the tanks properly. A separate organisation must be instituted to look into tanks exclusively. Lokayukta has been explained all these information he said.

Meanwhile, Namma Bengaluru Foundation CEO Sridhar Pabbisetty said a report of the survey carried out by the Foundation has been submitted to the Lokayukta. All kinds of waste, including electronic waste, are being dumped into the lakes. They are getting into human bodies through vegetables grown with tanks waters. Lokayukta must advise the State Government to take action, he said.
