Another student kills self in IISc, toll reaches 4 since April; experts appeal students to knockout stress

Two days after reports of a PhD student lying dead after he allegedly took chemical substances, another student's death has come to light from the same IISc campus from Bengaluru. In the latest case, the student was found hanging in his hostel room. Following the incident, mental health experts has told that its time that withdrawal symptoms among students should be watched and counseled in advance.

IISc's salubrious 500-acre campus is still not able to calm its students who are come for PhD courses. Due to stress and now another student has killed himself.

As per reports, since April, this is the fourth such incident where IISc's student has committed suicide. More shockingly, in 7 days two cases were reported.

In the latest case, a student Rishabraj Mesharam hailing from Gwalior was found hanging in his hostel.

The victim was 21-year-old and joined the campus in 2018 after his pre-university to graduate in BSc stream. It is said he too was consulting doctors at NIMHAS after one of his friend died by suicide in April.

His hostel mates and the guard broke open the door as there no response from him. The victim was found hanging.

The institute has once again shared a customary condolence note and asked the students to avail the wellness and counseling facilities from the campus.

On Sunday, another student Rajashri Bhattacharya, a Kolkata native doing his PhD was found dead after he consumed chemicals. He too was consulting experts from NIMHANS for stress and mental health issues.

In March, 34-year-old PhD student Ranadheer Kumar from Bihar committed suicide

Similarly on in April, a student named Rohan pursuing BSc has committed suicide.

Watch out for symptoms and seek help, say experts:

In recent times, students right from class 10 to higher studies end up committing suicide due to academics and pressure.

Dr Gajanana Kulkarni, Consultant Psychiatrist, Apollo Hospital who pointing at the IISc wellness center and 24x7 helpline, appealed students who are depressed and may become suicide victims may often show signs to opt these services and also seek experts help outside campus if necessary.

He stressed that when students show withdrawal symptoms like changes in the day-to-day routine to be monitored.

He also pointed out that such students may avoid interactions. They may find the academic activity very tiresome. Students who earlier enjoyed doing the day-to-day activity may start to withdraw from it and opine that such persons are prone to taking extreme steps.
