Mumbai: Indian Navy on Wednesday inducted Scorpene-class submarine INS Karanj at Mumbai in Maharashtra in the presence of its chief Admiral Karambir Singh and former chief Admiral VS Shekhawat (Retd).

Built by Mazagon Dock Limited, INS Karanj is a  diesel-electric attack submarine and a third of project P-75.

In 2017, the Indian Navy commissioned the first scorpene-class submarine INS Kalavari while the INS Khanderi was inducted in September 2019.

INS Karanj sailed for over 100 days as part of the trials before it was commissioned.

The 67.5 metres long with a water-displacing capacity of 17,000 tonnes when completely submerged was delivered to Indian Navy last month.

Three more such submarines are under development and sea trials phase and these include INS Vela, INS Vagir and INS Vagsheer.

While the first two are undergoing sea trials, INS Vagsheer is still under development.

Scorpene-class submarines are a key asset for the Navy as they can undertake anti-surface as well as anti-submarine warfare missions.
