Indian Army's Covid management initiatives

In keeping with its ethos of selfless service to the nation, the Indian Army has created a number of Covid facilities on a war footing in order to provide extensive medical assistance to veterans and their dependents at a number of places.

One such facility has been created at Base Hospital Delhi Cantonment (BHDC) where the entire hospital has been converted into a Covid hospital with comprehensive arrangements for providing critical care to all incoming patients.

At the start of the current Covid wave, the Base Hospital catered for 340 Covid beds of which just 250 beds were oxygenated.

By April 30, there will be a 650-bedded facility in Base Hospital, out of which 450 beds will be oxygenated.

The Intensive Care Unit has also been enhanced from 12 beds to 35 ICU beds.

The next phase of expansion will see the present capacity being augmented to 900 oxygenated beds by the second week of June 2021.

The force has established a dedicated Covid-19 Medical Facility at the old Command Hospital Complex in Pune of Maharashtra, where substantial capacity has been created for treating civil patients referred by the Pune district medical officer.

The Indian Army assisted in the opening of a 900-bedded hospital at Ahmedabad in Gujarat and a 100-bedded isolation facility at Barmer in Rajasthan.

Similar efforts have also been made at multiple locations in Madhya Pradesh, wherein a 100-bedded facility at Bhopal and two 40-bedded facilities at Gwalior and Saugor have been established.

At Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren's request, Namkom-based military hospital in Ranchi opened a 50-bedded Covid-19 care facility on April 27 for civilian patients.
