Fugitive diamond jeweller Mehul Choksi returned to Antigua and Barbuda after his lawyers cited his worsening medical condition in the Dominican High Court.

Three days ago, the Dominican High Court granted him bail and allowed Mehul Choksi to travel to Antigua and Barbuda for medical treatment.

People familiar with the developments said Choksi landed at Antigua’s VC Bird International Airport in an air ambulance around 3.30 pm Wednesday Caribbean time (Thursday early morning India time), following which he was received by ministry of foreign affairs officials.

Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal said, “My client Mehul Choksi has returned to his home in Antigua safely. He faced no issues while entering back in Antigua. He is receiving medical treatment and his family is feeling relieved however torture during kidnapping has him caused lot of psychological and physical harm. All well that ends well. After tasting success in Dominica, now the legal team is gearing up for long drawn fight in Antigua”.

Earlier this week, Choksi was granted bail by a Caribbean court on medical grounds and allowed to travel back to Antigua and Barbuda. The Dominican court asked him to furnish a bond of 10,000 Eastern Caribbean dollars and also asked him to return to Dominica after treatment.

India sought his deportation from Dominica directly as he was a prohibited immigrant there, for which he is facing charges there.

It will now become difficult for the Indian government to bring back the fugitive, who was undergoing a trial in the Dominican Court for his extradition to India. Choksi is the key accused in a Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan fraud case. Choksi left India in 2018 before the scam came to light.
