New Delhi: Days after evacuating its embassy officials from Kabul soon after the Taliban took over Afghanistan, India said on Thursday that the rest of its nationals will be evacuated from the war-torn country as soon as Kabul airport reopens.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "Currently Kabul airport is not operational. We will resume our operation to evacuate people from Kabul as soon the airport service will resume. We will be able to revisit this issue once operations at Kabul airport resume. The majority of Indians have left Afghanistan.”

Speaking over the India-Taliban meeting that took place in Doha, Bagchi said that India’s immediate focus is to ensure that Afghan soil is not used for terrorist activities directed against it.

"We received a positive response," he said referring to the meeting between Indian Ambassador to Qatar Deepak Mittal and Taliban leader Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai in Doha two days ago.

He said that India is not aware of what kind of government will be formed in Afghanistan. The MEA spokesperson said, "We are not aware of any detail or nature of what kind of govt could be formed in Afghanistan. I have no update on our meeting with the Taliban," said Bagchi.

To a volley of questions on whether India would recognise a Taliban regime in the backdrop of the meeting between the two sides, Bagchi said, " It was just a meeting. I think these are very early days."

Asked whether India will have more meetings with the Taliban, the MEA spokesperson said he does not want to speculate.

"I would not like to speculate on the future. I have no update to share on that," he said.

Taliban are all set to announce the formation of a new government in Kabul and Anamullah Samangani, a member of the Taliban’s cultural commission confirmed that their supreme leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada will be a prime minister or president who will run the country.
