Sweden gang rape live streamed on Facebook

After the assault was live streamed on a closed Facebook group, a witness tipped off the police about the incident. And, the police soon confirmed there were many other witnesses.

Another online witness revealed that the woman was assaulted by three armed men before cops arrived and turned off the camera in an apartment in Uppsala. The three men have been arrested.

Another witness told the Expressen, "How can you do such a thing to a girl? And how can you do it live when you know that you are going to go there?"

The victim was said to be close to unconscious. The police also spoke about a second video wherein the woman was probably forced to deny being raped. One of the men is reported to be a repeat offender with criminal record.

Facebook Live and broadcasting crimes

Facebook Live was launched in late 2015 to broadcast news. It was a step to combat Twitter's Periscope and attempt to becoming a news source. However, there have been many instances when it has been used to live stream crimes. In Chicago, it was was used to live stream a video showing a mentally disabled man being tortured.

Last year, Antonio Perkins was shot dead when live-streaming a video. Moreover, we've also seen a 12 year old live stream her suicide. Facebook has penned down some Community Standards for broadcasting live video on Facebook.

According to  Facebook, for instance, if a person has witnessed a shooting and uses Facebook Live to raise awareness or find the shooter, it will be allowed. However, if someone shared the same video to mock the victim or celebrate the shooting, the video will be removed.
