Wawrinka defeats Djokovic in US Open 2016 final

Stan Wawrinka clinched his third Grand Slam in three years after he defeated the reigning World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the final of the US Open 2016 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday.

He had earlier won the Australian Open and French Open in 2014 and 2015 respectively. This is the second time Wawrinka has defeated Djokovic in a Grand Slam final having done that earlier in 2015.

Wawrinka, who claimed to have entered the New York tournament without the goal of winning it, sealed the match in four sets - 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 7-5 6-3 - that included 46 winners showing the control he had in his shot-making.

"This is amazing. I came here without the goal of winning it but stepped on the court trying to win the match. I played a lot of tennis, and I am empty. There was so much emotion with the crowd, the atmosphere, the stadium, it's been an amazing night," the 31-year-old who is a Wimbledon win away for completing his career slam told BBC."This is amazing. Djokovic, a 12-time Grand Slam winner, received three walkovers during the tournament and had spent a mere nine hours on the court getting to the final as compared to Wawrinka's hard fought 18-hours.

Although, the Serbian started the game strong with a first set win, he struggled physically because of a blistered and bloodied toe for which he was treated.  Despite this, the two-time US Open champion continued his fight, much to the advantage of his opponent.
