Ruturaj Gaikwad’s comments on CSK’s squad and captaincy sparked mixed reactions from fans after the opening defeat. Supporters voiced concerns over accountability, leadership, and timing of his remarks ahead of the Punjab clash.
Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has urged patience with his young squad, insisting he is not “forcing” his captaincy style as the franchise enters its first season without MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina. His remarks, however, have triggered sharp reactions from fans who believe accountability and leadership must be stronger after a disappointing start.

CSK handed debuts to five players in their opening game of IPL 2026, including Kartik Sharma, who was bought for a record ₹14.20 crore. The rookies faltered against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, struggling on a difficult pitch. Gaikwad downplayed the setback, saying youngsters need time to adapt to the pressures of the IPL.
Fans React To Gaikwad’s Comments
Supporters were quick to weigh in on Gaikwad’s calm tone. Some accused him of making excuses too early in the season. “Calmness is one thing but why has he started giving excuses right from the beginning,” one fan wrote. Others questioned his suitability for the role, with comments like “Ruturaj is not captaincy material” and “Not too late, just change the captaincy. Everything will fall in place.”
Another section of fans felt his words were accurate but poorly timed. “What he said is 100% correct. But some things are better left unsaid by a captain especially after just one game this season,” read one reaction.
The debate reflects the high expectations surrounding CSK’s transition. With Dhoni gone, Gaikwad is tasked with balancing development of new talent and maintaining the franchise’s winning culture.
Gaikwad also addressed concerns about Chepauk’s pitch, noting that weather conditions often dictate how the surface plays. He said the team has the depth to adapt, whether the wicket favors batting or spin. Friday’s clash against Punjab Kings will be played on the same black-soil pitch that hosted India’s high-scoring T20 World Cup game against Zimbabwe earlier this year.
Despite the criticism, Gaikwad emphasized creating a nurturing environment for the squad. “There’s pressure from families, media, and teammates. To cope with that and get into IPL performance mode, sometimes it takes time,” he explained.
