The assassination of MM Kalaburgi completes one year

A huge protest has been staged today in Dharwad by a progressive thinkers' forum, as the police have not shown any progress in the investigation into the death of writer and research scholar MM Kalaburgi who was murdered a year ago.

The protest march is to start from Kalaburgi’s residence and the protesters gather at the Kalabhavan Maidan, Dharwad. The delay in the investigation and threat to the freedom of expression are the main themes for the protest.

The 77-year-old MM Kalaburgi was assassinated one year ago. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is investigating the case. It has interrogated more than 40 suspects, but so far not a single trace has been found of the killers. He was killed at his residence in Kalyananagar, Dharwad on August 30, 2015 at around 8.30 a.m.

Two unknown people came in a bike and shot at him on the threshold of his house. The police have found similarities between this murder and assassinations of Govind Pansare, and Narendra Dhabholkar and are investigating on this connection.

A few books on Kalaburgi and a website will be released at the function.

“Research is not easy in a country like India, where emotional impulse plays major role. Here often, the researcher has to hang on cross” – MM Kalaburgi

GN Devi, renowned linguist, Antara Dev Sen, daughter of Amartya Sen, Siddharth Varadarajan, journalist and other national and international thinkers and writers are participating in the protest. More than 100 social and cultural organisations of Karnataka are joining this protest.

“Why the progressive thinkers are targeting only Hindu organisations? Why they are not urging the SIT to carry an investigation on Veerashaiva Maths and Organisations?” – Pramod Mutalik, Chairman, Sri Rama Sene.
