Ramya stands firm questions RSS absence in freedom struggle

Speaking to Suvarna News in Mandya, actress Ramya reminded viewers that the Congress people fought for the freedom of the country while the RSS was missing from the main struggle.

Watch Ramya speak to the channel:

She also said that a real patriot should take part in building the nation, considering people of all castes and religions alike, wishing good for all.

Naturally, Ramya's statement has become painful for several right-wing organisations, who have already begun protests. Though, historical records do indicate that hardly any member of the RSS was actively involved in the freedom struggle.

Right-wing anger against her has been at a searing high ever since she returned to India from the SAARC meet held in Pakistan. Countering the Defence Minister's claims, she said that she felt that ordinary citizens of Pakistan were just Indians, and the whole country was not a 'hell'.

Unable to handle such mild praise of Pakistan, right-wingers have been foaming at the mouth ever since. A sedition case was also filed against her.

Throughout it all, Ramya stood her ground and did not change her statement.

Her name was dragged into a controversy once again when she visited Mangaluru.

"I love Mangalore.  I keep visiting this place.  For the election, this was the place where I started my campaign. I won't get upset by what happened (moral policing, gau rakshan) just because of this, I won't call Mangalore as hell.  I didn't speak for or against Pakistan. I believe in peace and harmony. I request media to exercise responsibility. I am now slapped with a sedition charge.  I will anyway deal with that case legally,” she had said. Following this, some right-wingers had egged her car.

Pro-Hindu organisations promptly accused Ramya of calling Mangaluru as a hell.

And as is the usual case, those who claim to be the 'sanskari' protectors of the patriotism and the nation's culture proceeded to abuse Ramya online - using the worst obscenities.

However, interestingly, all of this has only brought Ramya to the limelight in Karnataka, something that undoubtedly has helped her political and cinematic career immensely.
