Promised compensation, family struggles as BBMP dawdles

Promised compensation family struggles as BBMP dawdles

While the death of Firoz Pasha (48), who died when heavy winds uprooted a huge Indian Cork Tree on him on June 27, might have been very tough for his family, the treatment meted out to them by the BBMP after the incident is perhaps just as painful.

Immediately after the incident, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Manjunath Prasad had visited the Malleswaram KC General Hospital and announced a compensation of ₹1 lakh for the victim's family on the spot.

But as Sibgathualla, the younger brother of Firoz, told Asianet Newsable, his life has become nearly unbearable since then. He has been running from pillar to post to get the promised compensation, with little result.

"My brother was a mid-day meal supplier to various offices. At the time of the accident, he was on his way to an office to collect payment. He had mentioned that he would use the money to buy clothes for his children as it was the month of Ramzan then. Now, in another 22 days, the Bakr Eid festival will be celebrated. But there is still no response from the BBMP. Several times, I have waited near the BBMP commissioner's office for hours together. But it is of no use. Our family is in severe debt, as my brother had borrowed money to invest in the business," said Sibgathulla, who is a small time businessman.

"If the BBMP cannot fulfil its promise, then they should not give any assurance," he added.

So far, there has been no updates from the BBMP about the case or the reason for the delay.
