The performance of self-financing Engineering Colleges touched a new low when the APJ Abdulkalam Technological University published results of the second-semester examinations. The success percentage in ten self-financing colleges was less that 10 and in one college where 250 students appeared for the examinations, just five managed to pass.

The University released the results of the second semester examinations of 152 engineering colleges under its jurisdiction. In St Gregorios Self Financing Engineering College at Kasargod, only two students got the pass mark while four managed a win in Pinnacle Engg. College at Kollam.

While the Self Financing Colleges fared poor, seven government engineering colleges found a place among the top ten best performing institutions. The Technological University Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr M Abdul Rahman blamed the performance of self-financing colleges on the poor academic standard of students, lack of experienced teachers and infrastructure.

Interestingly, the lobby of self-financing engineering colleges had long been pressurising the government to allow them to admit students without entrance examinations. The University had denied permission to induct students for the first semester in four self-financing colleges this year, citing poor performance and lack of facilities.
