  • MLA Basavaraja Horatti suggested that the government  offer Hindi training to the legislators.
Objection to Governors Hindi speech

The opening speech given by Governor VR Vala, in the joint session meeting of the Karnataka legislature, triggered a debate in the assembly on Monday, February 13. For the second time the Governor gave his speech in Hindi in the Joint session. JDS leader Basavaraja Horatti said that many legislators could not comprehend the seriousness and significance of Governor’s speech as they are unable to understand Hindi and told that people’s representatives were sitting idly and chatting with each other when the Governor was giving the speech.

He also added that he has deep regard for the national language and suggested the government offer Hindi training to the legislators if they are bound to listen to a Hindi speech. He also suggested the government to provide the Governor with a kannada version of the speech written in Hindi script.

SV Sunkanura, BJP leader, opposed the comments of Horatti, claiming that the MLAs should know the National language. Another BJP leader, KS Eshwarappa, welcomed the suggestion of Horatti. However he objected to the stand of legislators who oppose Hindi.

Responding to the BJP leaders’ opinions, Congress leader HM Revanna opined that all the legislators of Tamil Nadu would have unified in opposing the Governor if he had given a Hindi speech in TN’s joint assembly.

Horatti later recalled the speech of previous Governors, who used to utter at least one or two sentences in Kannada in the beginning and at the end of their speeches. He put an end to the debate - stating that he only reiterated the opinions of some new legislators.
