Masjid calls for boycott of Kerala youth over Facebook post

Masjid calls for boycott of Kerala youth over Facebook post

Labeeb, a CPM worker from Anappara in Wayanad, was a bit disappointed when a few of his relatives and neighbours did not turn up for his wedding recently.  But the young man was determined to fight the social boycott imposed by the Mahal committee on him for criticising Muslim League leader Hyderali Shihab Thangal, who is also a respected religious leader.

Khidamathul Islam Sangam Juma Masjid Committee in his locality had issued a letter to Labeeb's father when the family was in full swing preparing for his marriage. It said that the Mahal committee or its religious leaders would not cooperate with family events like wedding and housewarming of the family since his son insulted Thangal on social media.  By 'insulting' Thangal, the youth insulted the whole community, the committee noted.

The youth shared an image that showed BJP state president Kummanam Rajashekharan and Thangal as groom and bride, suggesting that the BJP and the Muslim League had developed a secret affair during the Assembly elections in Kerala. The post infuriated the Masjid committee members who played on the religious sentiments and warned of social boycott.

Though the family was initially shocked, it could not dampen the spirit of the marriage. Soon, Labeeb's father KM Moideenkutty moved a petition before Kozhikode Wakf Tribunal against the decree of the Masjid committee. The verdict of the tribunal on the day came as a big relief for the family as it stayed the Masjid committees letter.

Labeeb, a CPM sympathiser, says that Panakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal is not above criticism. Thangal is not a spiritual leader and he is not immune to criticism  just as other political leaders.  He also said that he was least affected by the ostracisation bid as he found more supporters than earlier.
