Kerala students stranded in Uttar Pradesh

As many as 20 Malayalee students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), who were sent to Uttar Pradesh as part of a ‘cultural migration’ scheme, are reportedly stranded in a flood-hit school without toilets or basic facilities.

The students from Navodaya Vidyalaya at Neryamangalam in Ernakulam were shifted to JNV Ballia in Uttar Pradesh last month as part of a one-year cultural migration programme. They were shifted to another JNV school in Mau following floods in Ganga River. The students are lodged in a hostel without toilets and other basic facilities.

"The children were moved to Mau only after water level became really high. They did not even get time to take their belongings with them," one of the parents said.

The students informed parents back home that the school and hostel lacked basic facilities. The students complained that even girls were not provided toilet facilities.

"The school authorities did not inform us of any such incident,” said another parent. “Nor did they inform us that the students got shifted to the school in Mau following a flood. We came to know about the problems only when the distressed children rang up," she added. The parents also alleged that the students were ill treated by school authorities and teachers.

They have also submitted a complaint to Kerala Chief Minister seeking immediate intervention to bring the children back from UP. They are also concerned that the children might lose an academic year if they were brought back home.
