Kerala Police to train woman in self defence

In view of increasing cases of atrocities against women, Kerala police have come up with an innovative idea to equip them to deal with harassment. The self-defence training aims to equip women mentally and physically to deal with all kinds of atrocities.

The defence technique developed by the police force is simple and easy in comparison to martial arts like Karate and Kalari. It is so simple that women of all ages can learn the technique in a short time span. Kerala Police Department aims to open training centres in all the 14 districts in the state.

The techniques imparted at the centre would help women protect themselves from all kinds of harassment and attacks they face in public spaces, state police chief DGP Loknath Behra said.

Women will be equipped to fight various atrocities including acid attacks, sexual assaults and even domestic violence. "Our Pink initiatives like Pink Beat and Pink Patrol have already been helpful. With the launch of self-defence skills, we expect a remarkable decrease in incidents of violence against women. The move aims to spread mass awareness against atrocities among women," he said.

It will take only 60 hours to master the techniques. The course includes defence techniques, enhancing confidence and personality training to women besides creating awareness on pro-women laws.

The project cost is estimated at ₹42 lakh and the state level centre will be set up at Thiruvananthapuram. Other than the self-defence course, the department will also conduct training-cum-awareness programmes in educational institutions, offices and residents associations. The department has already given training to 500 women officers to impart the programme and expects the centres to be operational by March.
