Karnataka's tribal student stipends a step in the right direction

  • Students of Koraga and Janukuruba communities will get a monthly stipend.
  • The state government will also give free ration to the people of Gowdalu and Hasaluru communities.
Karnataka government to give stipends to tribal students

In an encouraging move, the Karnataka state government will give students of Koraga and Janukuruba communities a fixed stipend every month until the time they get a job from this February.

College going student after completion of class 10 will be given ₹2,000 per month; students of bachelor’s course will avail ₹2,500 and after completing graduation they will get ₹3,500 and those students who will complete post-graduation will get ₹4,500 every month.

Social Welfare Minister of Karnataka, H Anjaneya, showed his concern about the declining number of students among these two communities and that to encourage the students the government has come up with this scheme reported The New Indian Express.

Apart from this the minister also announced free ration for members of Gowdalu and Hasaluru communities. “The population of these tribes is only 5,000. The scheme will start on February 1,” he was quoted as saying.

This is an excellent practical move by the state government to reduce students from dropping out from schools and colleges. Koraga was declared as one of the most backward tribes in India by the government of India. In 2012, The Hindu reported that the malnutrition is high among the Koraga children. In such a situation, encouraging education among the student of this community is a welcoming move by the government.
