After the verbal war between the young legislator M Swaraj and the CPI mouthpiece worsened into a sickening spar between the two major parties in the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, the CPM state secretary has warned against public statements that would escalate the situation.

The CPM and the CPI have common platforms to discuss differences. The difference of opinion should not be dragged into public, Kodiyeri said. “Opportunistic stand will not benefit the growth of the Left as it was evident from the situation after the 1964 split in the Communist Party of India,” he reminded. He also referred to the CPI lending support to the declaration of Emergency in 1975, taking a jibe at the party for taking an ‘opportunistic stand.’

Balakrishnan’s statement comes in the wake of a controversial article published in the CPI mouthpiece Janayugam against CPM legislator M Swaraj from Thrippunithura.

In reply to the sarcastic article, the young MLA stated on Tuesday that he would not use the same language. But he sharply responded to the allegations raised against him in the article and said that it the choice of language showed that the CPI also joined the Sangh Parivar and the Congress in attacking him personally.

“Sangh Parivar and Congress used to hurl such abuses against me, now the CPI has joined them. The article published in Janayugom shows the culture of the person who wrote it. There is no one in the CPI brave enough for a direct and open debate,” Swaraj said.

The Janayugam article was in response to a Facebook post by Swaraj against CPI Ernakulam district secretary P Raju, who played a crucial role in bringing nearly 2,000 CPM workers over to the CPI camp. Swaraj’s comments aimed at belittling CPI, the second largest party in the LDF had apparently irked the CPI leadership.

CPI State secretary Kanam Rajendran blamed Swaraj and said it was the MLA who started blame game against the party and its leaders.

CPM state secretary said that there were attempts from certain quarters to create problems between the two big partners in the Left front. “The two parties have no problem in the national or state level. Certain local issues are being blown out of proportion to reinforce the propaganda against the left unity,” he added.
