Comrade we also want to walk freely and fearlessly

Support is pouring in for renowned Mollywood actress who was abducted and assaulted at Kochi on Friday night. After coming under criticism for failing to ensure women's safety, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan talked to the actress over the phone and expressed solidarity.  Kodiyeri Balakrishnan also wrote about the conversation with the actress on his Facebook page. But the social media is discussing a response to this post by a girl student who was allegedly manhandled and abused by SFI activists at University College campus in Thiruvananthapuram.

"Talked to the famous actress who was attacked at Kochi. Comforted her and sought details on the  incident. Also extended all help from our part to ensure that the culprits are nabbed and to punish them. The CPM will be with the girl to go ahead strong," the CPM leader wrote on his Facebook page.

The social media is now discussing a reply to this by Surya Gayatri, one of the students of University College at Thiruvananthapuram, who was attacked allegedly by a gang of SFI activists for sitting with a boy friend on the campus.

"Happy that you took a stand against moral policing at Azheekal and for standing with the actress. But why didn't you utter a word against the (incidents) in University College, situated very close to AKG Centre (CPM state headquarters) and the state Secretariat," Surya Gayatri replied to Balakrishnan's post.

"Comrade, we also want to walk freely, with dignity and without fear. We don't demand that you should punish the culprits by just listening to us. Conduct a comprehensive investigation. Then you will understand the truth," the student wrote.

"Even a word of assurance that you will take action after investigating the incident (of moral policing in University College ) would be a relief to me," Surya Gayatri said, introducing herself as a leftist. "Hope we are not mistaken in trusting this government," she added.

Surya Gayatri, her college mate Ashmita and their friend Jijish were roughed up and abused by a group of suspected SFI activists in the first week of this month at University College, the stronghold of the leftist student organisation. The victims alleged that it was a case of moral policing and that they were manhandled for sitting with their male friend. The incident put the SFI and CPM in a difficult spot after the incident ignited a heated debate in the state.
