Reserve Bank of India clarifies regarding the Rs 2,000 denomination banknote's cessation of value after the deadline to exchange it expires on Saturday, September 30, 2023

On May 19, RBI announced withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes in circulation and gave public time till September 30 to either deposit the currency notes in their bank accounts or get them exchanged.

"The Rs 2000 note was introduced with a specific purpose to replenish currency during demonetisation; the purpose has been served. There is no reason for the public to rush to banks, there is enough time of 4 months. We expect most notes to return," RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said.

On Friday, in a surprise move, RBI announced withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation but gave public time till September 30 to either deposit such notes in accounts or exchange them at banks.

Former principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nripendra Misra, who was in the thick of things during November 2016 demonetisation, said PM Modi always believed that the Rs 2000 notes are not practical currency for the day to day transactions. 

According to RBI, it has observed that Rs 2,000 denomination is not commonly used for transactions. It also said that the stock of banknotes in other denominations continue to be adequate to meet the currency requirement of the public.

Unlike the November 2016 shock demonetisation when old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes were invalidated overnight, the Rs 2,000 notes will continue to be a legal tender till September 30.
