In Sharjah there are two lists which neighbouring countries Pakistan and India are topping. Sadly, it is not something to be proud of.

In a list released by the Sharjah Traffic and Patrol Department, Pakistanis topped the list of causing the most number of traffic accidents in 2016. On the other hand, they also held the top spot for having witnessed the most number fatalities in the road accidents. Over 32 Pakistanis have died in road accidents. Next in the list came 30 Indians, 23 Emiratis, 13 Bangladeshi, and 3 Filipinos.

Reports mentioned in Emirati dailies, also mentioned how the Sharjah Traffic Department have also launched safety awareness campaigns targeting Asian nationals to reduce the number of deaths caused by accidents in the emirate.

Their statistics proved that close to 85 per cent of the total accidents in the country occurred due to human error. The reasons attributed to most accidents were due to over-speeding, distractions, entering the road without ensuring safety, driving in the opposite direction, crossing red-lights, improper method of changing of lanes and failing to maintain enough space between vehicles.

The police blamed a lack of awareness among these communities.

This is a matter of shame for Indians as even abroad our reputation for not following traffic rules precedes us and in this case are causing the deaths of others as well. Indians have always been in a  hurry and when speeding horses from Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and straight roads in the Gulf countries enter the combination, we often lose control of man and machine.

Crossing roads at designated zebra crossings is something Indians have not been able to master as yet, here as well. It is only but natural that such people will continue these errant practices abroad as well. The lack of awareness of traffic rules and road manners is a blot on the Indian community abroad. It is important that the Indian government takes notice of this and ensures that people who go abroad should be schooled from here itself on the regulations that exist in their respective destinations, so that the country is not humiliated for its citizens refusal to conform to rules.
